New Zealand's owner-listed motorhome hire platform

Most motorhome hire in New Zealand runs through depot fleets: same vehicle, same handover yard, same checkout form every time. Camplify is different. Private owners list their own campervans and motorhomes when they are not using them. You hire directly from the person who owns the vehicle - the bedding they chose, the kitchen they broke in, route notes from trips they have done themselves.

Many Camplify vehicles carry the Certified Self-Contained approval that unlocks freedom camping across New Zealand. You can search specifically for self-contained vehicles, filter by pickup city, and message the owner before you book. The booking, payment, and roadside assistance all run through Camplify.

Built to take the worry out of an international trip

  • 24/7 roadside assistance, included

Every Camplify booking includes 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance, covered by the booking fee. One number, day or night, anywhere on the road.

  • No surprise fees at handover

All fees - daily rate, owner's service fee, any delivery, and your chosen excess level - appear on the booking screen before you pay. Nothing is added at pickup.

  • Comprehensive protection included

Every booking uses Camplify's Accident Excess Reduction (AER). Choose your excess level at booking. If you finish the trip without an incident, you don't pay the excess.

  • Book and pay before you fly

You book online from your home country, weeks or months ahead. Pay through Camplify in NZD; your bank handles the conversion. No New Zealand bank account or SIM needed.

Freedom camping: New Zealand's biggest perk, explained

Most countries have campsites. New Zealand has freedom camping - the right to stay overnight at designated DOC reserves, council land, and roadside areas that no hotel or campsite booking can reach.

The catch: freedom camping is only legal in a Certified Self-Contained vehicle. A self-contained motorhome or campervan carries a fixed toilet, a waste holding tank, and at least three days of fresh water - everything needed to stay at a site with no facilities without impacting the environment. Vehicles that meet the standard receive an approval that is checked at many freedom camping spots.

On Camplify, you can filter your search to show only self-contained vehicles. Most owner-listed motorhomes on the platform are certified. The listing page states the self-containment status; if you are unsure, message the owner before you book - they confirm in writing through the platform.

The trip you keep almost taking

New Zealand has been on the list for years. Every time you get close to booking, something pushes it back. The flight price, the timing, the question of whether it is worth it for two weeks.

The country is a long way from everywhere. That is also what makes it worth the flight. No crowds at the freedom camping spots. Roads you can drive for an hour without seeing another vehicle. A summer that runs from November to March while much of the northern hemisphere is cold and grey. The hard part is saying yes to the dates. The trip tends to take care of itself after that.

Ferries, alpine passes, and other things to plan for

The ferry. The Interislander runs Wellington to Picton (roughly 3.5 hours) and Bluebridge runs the same crossing. Both take campervans and motorhomes. Both fill up in peak summer and school holidays - book the ferry as soon as your dates are fixed.

Alpine passes. South Island routes through Arthur's Pass, Lewis Pass, and the Crown Range can require snow chains in winter (June through September).

Distances. New Zealand looks compact on a map. Auckland to Wellington is around 8 hours by road; Christchurch to Queenstown is around 4.5 hours. Most NZ roads are two-lane with a 100 km/h limit; average speed including stops runs closer to 60 km/h. Plan for a relaxed pace - it is that kind of country.

A Camplify caravan set up at a New Zealand vineyard campsite, ready for arrival - the caravan-to-destination delivery model

Have it delivered to your start or destination

Two ways Camplify owners deliver in New Zealand. Motorhomes and campervans: owners drop them at the airport, your first-night hotel, or a pickup point you choose; you drive from there.

Caravans: owners tow them all the way to your campsite, holiday park, or DOC site, set them up, and pick them up at the end; you never tow. The caravan-to-destination option is unique to peer-to-peer hire; depot fleets can't do it.

Plane to van: three patterns that work

  • City stay, then drive

Land in Auckland or Christchurch, spend two or three days in the city for the jet lag and the sightseeing, then pick up the van. Most Camplify owners will drop the van at your hotel on day three.

  • Straight from the airport

Use the near-airport filter to find vans within 15 minutes of major terminals. Handover takes around an hour. All owners walk you through the van before you pull away.

  • One-way or multi-city

Fly into Auckland, road trip south, fly home from Queenstown or Christchurch. Either pay an owner's one-way fee or find an owner who is happy to collect from a different city.

Common questions from international travellers

What is freedom camping in New Zealand?

Freedom camping is the right to stay overnight at designated DOC reserves, council land, and roadside areas outside of paid campsites. It is only legal in a Certified Self-Contained vehicle - a motorhome or campervan with a fixed toilet, waste holding tank, and at least three days of fresh water. The 2025 update increased fines to NZD 400 for non-certified vehicles at self-contained-only sites. Most Camplify motorhomes are certified; you can filter your search to show self-contained vehicles only.

How do I know if a Camplify van is certified self-contained?

The listing page states the self-containment status. If you are unsure, message the owner before you book - they confirm in writing through the Camplify platform. Owners are asked to keep their certification current; if you discover on arrival that a van does not have its certificate, contact Camplify support immediately.

What licence do I need to drive a motorhome in New Zealand?

Your home country licence is accepted in New Zealand for up to 12 months. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is strongly recommended as a backup - it is a cheap, quick document to obtain before you fly. Bring both your home licence and your passport to handover. Specific details for US, UK, German, and Singapore licences are in the country guides above.

Can I book and pay from overseas before I fly?

Yes. The entire booking is online. You pay through Camplify in NZD; your bank handles the conversion. Visa, Mastercard, and American Express all work. No New Zealand bank account, SIM card, or local paperwork is needed before you arrive.

Do I need to book the Cook Strait ferry in advance?

Yes - especially for campervans and motorhomes in peak summer (December to February) and school holidays. The Interislander and Bluebridge both run Wellington to Picton; the crossing takes around 3.5 hours. Book your ferry crossing as soon as your dates are confirmed. Cost runs around NZD 200 to 400 each way for a van plus passengers.

What if the van breaks down?

Every Camplify booking includes 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance, covered by the booking fee. One number, day or night. The owner is reachable separately via Camplify messaging and most arrange a like-for-like replacement or a hotel night if the issue cannot be fixed roadside.

How does damage cover work?

Camplify calls it Accident Excess Reduction (AER). You choose your excess level at booking - the excess is the maximum you would owe if the van is damaged during your hire. AER covers damage to the vehicle and third-party property. It does not replace personal travel cover for your belongings or personal injury. You choose once at booking; nothing is upsold at handover.

Can a motorhome be delivered to my hotel or the airport?

Many Camplify owners offer bespoke pickup: they drop the motorhome or campervan at your first-night hotel, the airport, or a pickup point you choose. For caravans, owners can tow the caravan all the way to your campsite or DOC site and set it up - you never tow. Both options are owner-arranged at owner-set rates, typically NZD 1.50 to 2.00 per kilometre round-trip. Details at camplify.co.nz/international/delivery.

Can I do a one-way trip (fly in one city, return from another)?

Some owners offer this. Check the listings. Fly into Auckland, road trip south, fly home from Christchurch or Queenstown. Either find an owner willing to collect from a different city, or pay a one-way relocation fee. Both are arranged with the owner through Camplify messaging before you book.

What is the best time of year to visit New Zealand?

New Zealand's peak season runs November to March (southern-hemisphere summer). For freedom camping, this is the best period - more DOC sites are accessible and the days are long. June to August is ski season in the South Island; alpine passes may require snow chains. April to October is quieter and cheaper for bookings. The country is worth visiting year-round - the South Island has a different character in each season.

How far in advance should I book?

For peak summer (December to February) and school holidays, book at least 4 to 6 months ahead. The best self-contained motorhomes fill fast for the Christmas-January period. For shoulder season (March to May, September to November), 6 to 10 weeks is usually enough. Book the Cook Strait ferry at the same time as the van.

What SIM card or data plan do I need?

Spark, One NZ (formerly Vodafone), and 2degrees all sell prepaid SIMs at Auckland and Christchurch airports. Coverage is good along major highways and in towns; remote South Island routes (Fiordland, the West Coast) can drop to no signal. A downloaded offline map (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) and the CamperMate app for freedom camping spots are worth having before you leave the city.
