Campervan & motorhome hire New Zealand for Singapore travellers | Camplify

A Camplify motorhome overlooking Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps at golden hour

Camplify is New Zealand's owner-listed motorhome hire platform

Most motorhome hire in New Zealand runs through depot fleets: same vehicle, same handover yard, same checkout form every time. Camplify is different. Private owners list their own campervans and motorhomes when they are not using them. You hire directly from the person who owns the vehicle - the bedding they chose, the kitchen they broke in, route notes from trips they have done themselves.

Many Camplify vehicles carry the Certified Self-Contained green sticker that lets you park overnight at hundreds of DOC and council freedom-camping sites across New Zealand at zero accommodation cost.

Built for Singapore travellers

We have hosted Singapore families on school-holiday laps, couples on South Island bucket-list trips, and adventure groups straight from Changi. These are the four things Singapore renters ask about first.

  • Pay with Singapore or international cards

Visa, Mastercard and American Express all work through Camplify. You pay in NZD; your bank handles the conversion from SGD. No New Zealand bank account needed to book or pay.

  • Singapore Class 3/3A licence - automatic available

Your Singapore driving licence is accepted in New Zealand for stays under 12 months. We recommend an IDP from the AA Singapore as cheap backup. If your licence is Class 3A (automatic only), filter for automatic transmission at search or ask the owner before booking - many Camplify motorhomes are automatics.

  • Driving on the left, like home

New Zealand drives on the left like Singapore. The road feels familiar from the first kilometre. NZ roads are slower and more winding than Singapore expressways - plan 60 km/h average, not 90. Owners walk you through the dash and the controls before you set off.

  • Comprehensive protection included

Every Camplify hire includes comprehensive protection covering damage and third-party liability. No carve-outs for Singapore licences, no separate underwriting to arrange. Each listing shows the excess and what is covered. Excess reduction options are available at booking.

The holiday your Singapore calendar keeps cancelling

School holidays in June and December book out fast. New Zealand fills even faster - peak summer from November through February, peak school-holiday winter from June through August. The trip is real. The window just needs to be locked in before everything else fills it. New Zealand has a direct Singapore Airlines flight from Changi; the 10 hours is the longest part of the planning.

Park overnight where the postcards are taken

New Zealand is one of the few countries where it is legal to sleep in a motorhome on a lakeside, a coastal headland, or a remote DOC site - no campground booking and no fee. The unlock is the Certified Self-Contained green sticker on the rear of the vehicle.

A self-contained motorhome carries its own fresh water, wastewater storage, and fixed toilet, so it can stay overnight without leaving a trace. NZ tightened the rules in 2025 (a green warrant card now sits beside the sticker), and councils enforce with NZD 400 fines. Many Camplify owners renewed under the new rules; ask before booking and the owner confirms.

Ferries, alpine passes, and other things to plan for

The Cook Strait ferry. Interislander and Bluebridge both cross Wellington to Picton (around 3.5 hours) and both carry motorhomes. Book ahead for December and January; spaces fill weeks out. Expect NZD 200 to 400 each way for a vehicle plus passengers.

Alpine passes. Arthur's Pass, Lewis Pass, and the Crown Range can require snow chains in winter (June to September). Snow and cold are a real contrast to Singapore - pack layers. Chains hire for around NZD 50 from Christchurch and Queenstown outlets.

Distances. NZ looks compact on a map and is, but the roads are winding coastal two-lanes, not expressways. Auckland to Wellington is 8 hours; Christchurch to Queenstown is 6. Plan 60 km/h average and every day works.

Have it delivered to where you want to start

Two ways Camplify owners deliver in New Zealand. Motorhomes and campervans: owners drop them at the airport, your first-night hotel, or a pickup point you choose; you drive from there. Caravans: owners tow them all the way to your campsite, holiday park, or DOC site, set them up, and pick them up at the end; you never tow. The caravan-to-destination option is unique to peer-to-peer; fleet hire firms cannot do it. Owner-set rates, typically NZD 1.50 to 2.00 per kilometre from their home base round-trip. Read how a delivered-van trip works at camplify.co.nz/international/delivery.

Plane to van: three patterns that work

Most Singapore visitors do not pick up the van the morning after they land. Pick the pattern that fits your trip.

  • City stay, then drive

Land in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown. Spend two or three days clearing the jet lag and seeing the city, then take handover when you are ready. Owners are flexible on dates.

  • Straight from the airport

Use the near-airport search filter to find motorhomes within 15 minutes of AKL, WLG, CHC, or ZQN. Many owners deliver direct to your terminal hotel or airport transfer.

  • One-way or multi-city

Fly into Auckland, road trip south, fly home from Queenstown via Changi. Pay an owner for one-way collection, or hire at the destination city. The airport filter works in every New Zealand gateway.

An owner who answers messages on the road

A typical Camplify host is someone who hires out their self-contained motorhome during the months they are not using it. Many have hosted international families before and are happy to drop the motorhome at an airport hotel so the first morning is easy.

Owner-listed motorhomes come with the bedding the owner picked, a kettle, a fridge that fits a week of groceries, a current self-containment certificate, and route notes from trips they have done themselves. Messages run through Camplify so everything stays on record if the navigation sends you somewhere unexpected.

Common questions from Singapore travellers

Can I hire a motorhome in New Zealand on my Singapore driving licence?

Yes. A valid Singapore Class 3 or Class 3A driving licence plus your passport is accepted in New Zealand for stays under 12 months. We recommend an International Driving Permit (IDP) from the AA Singapore as inexpensive backup - some rural areas and Avis/Hertz-style handovers request it. If your licence is Class 3A (automatic only), filter for automatic transmission at search and confirm with the owner before booking.

Are automatic transmission motorhomes available?

Yes. Many Camplify motorhomes have automatic transmission. Use the search filters to narrow results, or message the owner before booking - every listing specifies whether the vehicle is automatic or manual. If your Singapore licence is Class 3A (automatic only), this is the first thing to confirm.

Are ISOFIX child seats available for family trips?

Many Camplify motorhomes have ISOFIX anchor points for child seats. Ask the owner before booking to confirm the number of ISOFIX points and if child seats are included or need to be brought from home. New Zealand road rules require child restraints for children under 7, and from 7 until the seatbelt fits properly.

Will the motorhome be Certified Self-Contained for freedom camping?

Most likely yes, and you should ask before booking to confirm. NZ tightened the rules in 2025; vehicles that pass now carry a green sticker and a green warrant card. A certified motorhome parks overnight legally at hundreds of DOC sites and council freedom-camping areas at zero accommodation cost. Apps like Campermate and Rankers show the legal spots. Non-compliance: NZD 400 fines.

Can I take the motorhome between the North and South Islands?

Yes. Interislander and Bluebridge both cross Wellington to Picton (around 3.5 hours) and both carry standard motorhomes. Cost is around NZD 200 to 400 each way for a vehicle plus passengers. Book ahead - the December and January school-holiday sailings fill weeks out. The crossing through the Marlborough Sounds is a highlight on its own.

What if the motorhome breaks down somewhere remote?

Every Camplify hire includes 24/7 roadside assistance covered by the booking fee. The owner is also reachable through Camplify messaging and most arrange a replacement or a holiday-park night if the issue cannot be fixed roadside. Mobile coverage is good on main routes; Fiordland and the West Coast have patchy spots - download offline maps before you leave.

What protection is included for Singapore drivers?

Every Camplify hire includes comprehensive protection with damage and third-party liability coverage. No carve-outs for Singapore or SG licences, no separate underwriting to arrange. Each listing shows the excess and what is covered. Excess reduction options lower the excess at booking if you want extra peace of mind.

Can I get the motorhome delivered to a holiday park or DOC site?

Yes. Camplify is the only peer-to-peer platform in New Zealand that does this. Owners regularly deliver motorhomes to holiday parks, DOC campgrounds, beaches, and hiking trail heads. For caravans, owners tow them all the way to your campsite and set them up - you never tow. Owner-set delivery rates typically run NZD 1.50 to 2.00 per kilometre from their home base round-trip.

Can I pay with a Singapore Visa, Mastercard or American Express?

Visa, Mastercard, and American Express all work through Camplify. You pay in NZD and your bank handles the SGD conversion. No NZ bank account needed. Approximately 1 SGD = 1.1 NZD as of 2026; confirm with your bank for the current rate.

When is the best time for a New Zealand holiday from Singapore?

December through February is NZ summer - the warmest, longest days, and school-holiday peak. This aligns with Singapore's December school break: book motorhomes and ferry crossings 3 to 4 months ahead. June through August is NZ winter - the South Island ski season and Queenstown adventure season. March, April, October, and November are shoulder season: great weather, fewer crowds, and slightly lower prices. June and July from Singapore school holidays align with NZ's peak Queenstown period - book early.

How long should I plan for a New Zealand trip from Singapore?

Two weeks gives a focused South Island lap or a thorough North Island loop. Ten days works well for a Queenstown and Milford Sound base-camp trip or an Auckland to Rotorua North Island circuit. Three weeks comfortably covers North plus South with the Interislander ferry mid-trip. The 10-hour direct flight from Changi means the travel overhead is low; the main constraint is the holiday window.

Will my Singapore phone work in New Zealand, or do I need a local SIM?

Singapore plans on Singtel, Starhub, and M1 all roam in New Zealand but daily charges accumulate on long trips. The cheaper option is a local prepaid SIM at Auckland airport (Spark and One NZ cover the main routes) or an international eSIM like Airalo before you fly. Download offline maps for Fiordland and the West Coast where coverage is patchy.
