Campervan & motorhome hire New Zealand for German travellers | Camplify

Camplify is New Zealand's owner-listed motorhome hire platform

Most motorhome hire in New Zealand runs through depot fleets: same vehicle, same handover yard, same sticker on every van. Camplify is different. Private owners list their own campervans and motorhomes when they are not using them. You hire directly from the person who owns the vehicle - the bedding they chose, the kitchen they broke in, route notes from trips they have done themselves.

Many Camplify vehicles carry the Certified Self-Contained green sticker that lets you park overnight at hundreds of DOC and council freedom-camping sites across New Zealand at zero accommodation cost. That is not something a depot rental can replicate.

Built for German travellers

We have hosted German travellers on North Island loops, South Island full laps, and delivered campervans to Routeburn track-heads and Hawke's Bay wineries. These are the four things German renters ask about first.

  • Pay with European cards

Visa, Mastercard and American Express all work through Camplify. You pay in NZD; your bank handles the conversion from EUR. No New Zealand bank account needed to book or pay.

  • Drive on your German (Klasse B) licence

Your German EU driving licence (Klasse B) is accepted in New Zealand for stays under 12 months. We strongly recommend an International Driving Permit (IDP) - pick one up from the ADAC or any Landratsamt before you fly.

  • Driving on the left - a one-day adjustment

New Zealand drives on the left; Germany drives on the right. Most German hirers find the adjustment comfortable by the end of day one. Your owner walks you through the dash, the mirrors, and the road rules at handover. NZ roads are slower and quieter than German Autobahnen - plan 60 km/h average, not 120.

  • Comprehensive protection included

Every Camplify hire includes comprehensive protection covering damage and third-party liability - no separate underwriting for international drivers, no carve-outs for German licences. The same coverage a New Zealander gets, you get. Excess reduction options are available at booking.

The trip that keeps waiting for the right year

Every October it shifts to next summer; every summer the Sommerferien fill up before the flights do. New Zealand is not a two-week detour - it is a three or four-week journey that justifies the long-haul flight properly. The country has summer in the North Island from November through March and a proper ski season in the South Island from June. There is no wrong month. The only wrong move is another postponement.

Park overnight where the postcards are taken

New Zealand is one of the few countries where it is legal to sleep in a motorhome on a lakeside, a DOC campground, or a remote coastal headland - no campground booking and no fee. The unlock is the Certified Self-Contained green sticker on the rear of the vehicle.

A self-contained motorhome carries its own fresh water, wastewater storage, and fixed toilet. NZ tightened the certification rules in 2025 - vehicles that pass carry a green sticker and a green warrant card; councils enforce non-compliance with NZD 400 fines. Many Camplify owners have renewed under the new rules; ask before booking and the owner confirms.

Ferries, alpine passes, and the left-hand road

The Cook Strait ferry. Two companies - Interislander and Bluebridge - cross Wellington to Picton (around 3.5 hours). Both carry motorhomes. Book ahead in December and January; spaces fill weeks out. Expect NZD 200 to 400 each way for a vehicle plus passengers.

Alpine passes. Arthur's Pass, Lewis Pass and the Crown Range can need snow chains in winter (June to September). Chains hire for around NZD 50 from Christchurch and Queenstown outlets; many owners stock a set.

Distances. NZ looks compact and is, but the roads are winding two-lane coastal routes, not Autobahn. Auckland to Wellington is 8 hours; Christchurch to Queenstown is 6. Plan 60 km/h average and every day fits neatly.

Have it delivered to where you want to start

Two ways Camplify owners deliver in New Zealand. Motorhomes and campervans: owners drop them at the airport, your first-night hotel, or a pickup point you choose; you drive from there. Caravans: owners tow them all the way to your campsite, holiday park, or DOC site, set them up, and pick them up at the end; you never tow. The caravan-to-destination option is unique to peer-to-peer; depot fleets cannot do it. Owner-set rates, typically NZD 1.50 to 2.00 per kilometre from their home base round-trip. Read how a delivered-van trip works at camplify.co.nz/international/delivery.

Plane to van: three patterns that work

Most German visitors do not pick up the van the morning after they land. Pick the pattern that fits your trip.

  • City stay, then drive

Land in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown. Spend two or three days clearing the jet lag, then take handover when you are ready. Owners are flexible on dates.

  • Straight from the airport

Use the near-airport search filter to find motorhomes within 15 minutes of AKL, WLG, CHC, or ZQN. Many owners deliver direct to your terminal hotel.

  • One-way or multi-city

Fly into Auckland, drive south through the ferry, fly home from Queenstown. Either pay an owner for one-way collection, or hire at the destination city. The airport filter works in every NZ gateway.

An owner who answers messages on the road

A typical Camplify host is someone who hires out their self-contained motorhome during the months they are not using it themselves. Many have hosted international travellers before and are happy to drop the motorhome at an airport hotel or Routeburn track-head so the first morning is easy.

Owner-listed motorhomes come with the bedding the owner picked, a kettle, a fridge, a current self-containment certificate, and route notes from trips the owner has done themselves. Messages run through Camplify so everything stays on record.

Common questions from German travellers

Can I hire a motorhome in New Zealand on my German driving licence?

Yes. A valid German EU driving licence (Klasse B) plus your passport is enough to legally hire and drive a motorhome or campervan in New Zealand for stays under 12 months. We strongly recommend an International Driving Permit (IDP) as backup - pick one up from the ADAC or any Landratsamt before you fly. The IDP is inexpensive and can save friction at police checks on rural roads.

Driving on the left - how hard is the adjustment for German drivers?

Most German hirers find they are comfortable within the first day. The main moments to watch: turning out of a car park, turning left at a junction (left in NZ is like right in Germany), and your first morning after sleeping on it. NZ roads are slower and quieter than German roads - the 60 km/h average pace actually makes the adjustment easier. Your owner walks you through the dash and the road rules at handover; most have done this briefing for international guests before.

Will the motorhome be Certified Self-Contained for freedom camping?

Most likely yes, and you should ask the owner before booking to confirm. NZ tightened the certification rules in 2025; vehicles that pass carry a green sticker and a green warrant card. A certified motorhome parks overnight legally at hundreds of DOC sites and freedom-camping areas at zero cost. Apps like Campermate and Rankers show the legal spots. Non-compliance means NZD 400 fines.

Can I take the motorhome between the North and South Islands?

Yes. Interislander and Bluebridge both cross Wellington to Picton (around 3.5 hours), and both carry standard motorhomes. Cost is around NZD 200 to 400 each way for a vehicle plus passengers, depending on season. Book ahead - December and January sailings fill weeks out. The crossing through the Marlborough Sounds is a highlight on its own.

What if the motorhome breaks down in a remote area?

Every Camplify hire includes 24/7 roadside assistance funded by the booking fee. The owner is also reachable through Camplify messaging and most arrange a replacement or a free holiday-park night if the issue cannot be fixed roadside. Mobile coverage is good on main routes; it is patchier in Fiordland and the West Coast - plan offline maps for those stretches.

What protection is included for German drivers?

Every Camplify hire includes comprehensive protection with damage and third-party liability coverage. There are no carve-outs for German or EU licences and no separate underwriting to arrange. Each listing shows the excess and what is covered. Excess reduction options are available at booking if you want a lower excess.

Can I get the motorhome delivered to a DOC site or Routeburn track-head?

Yes. Camplify is the only peer-to-peer platform in New Zealand that does this. Owners deliver motorhomes to holiday parks, DOC campgrounds, beaches, hiking trail heads, and private properties. For caravans, owners tow them all the way to your campsite and set them up. Owner-set delivery rates typically run NZD 1.50 to 2.00 per kilometre from their home base round-trip.

Can I pay with a German Visa, Mastercard or American Express?

Visa, Mastercard, and American Express all work through Camplify. You pay in NZD and your bank handles the EUR conversion. No NZ bank account needed. Approximately 1 EUR = 1.8 NZD as of 2026; confirm with your bank for the current rate.

What is the best time for a New Zealand road trip from Germany?

The German Sommerferien window (late June to early September) overlaps with New Zealand's peak winter ski season in the South Island and mild shoulder season in the North. December through February is NZ summer - the busiest and most expensive period but the longest days. March, April, October, and November are shoulder - great weather, fewer people. New Zealand has a good answer for every month of the German school calendar.

How long should I plan for a proper New Zealand trip?

Three to four weeks is the sweet spot for most German travellers, especially given the Frankfurt-Auckland flight time. Three weeks gives a solid South Island lap plus five or six days in Auckland and the Coromandel. Four weeks comfortably covers North plus South with the ferry mid-trip and time to stop properly at Milford Sound, the Routeburn, and Wanaka.

What does petrol cost, and are there tolls in New Zealand?

Petrol runs roughly NZD 2.40 to 2.80 per litre (around EUR 1.30 to 1.50). Diesel motorhomes are common and run 20 to 30 percent cheaper on long trips. New Zealand has almost no toll roads - a short stretch near Auckland is the main exception. Rural roads are toll-free. Owners brief you on any local quirks at handover.

Do I need a local SIM or will my German phone work in New Zealand?

German phones on Telekom, Vodafone, and O2 roam in New Zealand but daily fees add up on long trips. The cheaper option is a local prepaid SIM at the airport - Spark and One NZ cover the main routes well - or an international eSIM like Airalo before you fly. Download offline maps (Maps.me, Google offline) for Fiordland and the West Coast; coverage is patchy in those areas regardless of carrier.
