Most motorhome hire in New Zealand runs through depot fleets: the same vehicle, the same handover yard, the same checkout form every time. Camplify is different. Private owners list their own motorhomes and campervans when they are not using them, and you hire directly from the person who owns the vehicle - the bedding they chose, the kitchen they broke in, route notes from trips they have driven themselves.
For a family travelling together, one larger motorhome keeps three generations in the same vehicle, with room to cook and rest along the way. Many Camplify vehicles are Certified Self-Contained, which lets you park overnight at hundreds of Department of Conservation and council freedom-camping sites across New Zealand at no accommodation cost.
Camplify is New Zealand's owner-listed motorhome marketplace, not a private deal you arrange on your own. Three things stand behind every booking.
You book and pay securely in the Camplify app, with the payment handled by the platform rather than in cash to the owner, and every booking includes comprehensive protection. You always know who you are dealing with before you travel.
Each vehicle and owner builds up ratings and reviews from past hirers, so you can read real feedback and see a track record before you book. Camplify's overall customer review score shows at the top of the site.
Every hire includes 24/7 roadside assistance, and Camplify support is there if plans change, so there is a platform behind the owner rather than just a private arrangement between strangers.
We have hosted Chinese families on multi-generation South Island trips, couples on scenic drives, and travellers adding New Zealand to an Australia holiday. These are the four things travellers from China ask about first.
Visa, Mastercard and American Express all work through Camplify, and you can check out with Apple Pay or Google Pay. You pay in NZD and your bank handles the conversion from CNY, so no New Zealand bank account is needed to book or pay. Alipay and WeChat Pay are not accepted, so bring an international card - or add it to Apple Pay before you travel.
Drive in New Zealand on your Chinese licence for stays under 12 months when you carry an International Driving Permit, or an NZTA-approved certified English translation of your licence. A licence not written in English needs one of these. Carry your licence, the permit or translation, and your passport. Automatic motorhomes are widely listed - filter for automatic at search.
New Zealand drives on the left. In China you drive on the right, so this is the one real change to get used to. Owners walk you through the dashboard and the controls at handover, and most drivers settle within the first day. NZ roads are slower and more winding than a Chinese expressway - plan for a 60 km/h average, not 90.
Every Camplify hire includes comprehensive protection covering damage and third-party liability. Each listing shows the excess and what is covered, and excess reduction options are available at booking if you want extra peace of mind.

Identical apartment towers, a packed metro, a ring road that never empties. The space and the quiet are exactly what a New Zealand motorhome trip is made of: a glacial lake to yourselves at dawn, an alpine road with no traffic, a different view from the window every night. The trip is real. The window just needs locking in - the flight, or the short hop across the Tasman from Australia, is the longest part of the planning, and New Zealand summer runs from December to February with long, warm days.
)
New Zealand has a dense network of holiday parks and campgrounds, the comfortable and family-friendly way to travel. You arrive to a powered site with hot showers, a camp kitchen, laundry, and often a pool or a playground for the children, with a lake or the mountains at the doorstep and other families nearby. Book a night or two ahead in summer and you always have a relaxed, ready base.
When you want more solitude, it is there too. Many Camplify motorhomes are Certified Self-Contained, which adds an optional bonus: you can park overnight at hundreds of designated spots beside a lake or on a quiet headland, at no accommodation cost. Ask the owner whether the vehicle is certified, and you can mix easy holiday-park comfort with the occasional night under the stars.

9 things to know before you road trip NZ
Practical reading from Kiwi owners: pace, weather, what to pack, and how to plan around the Cook Strait ferry crossing.
)
Driving on the left. The one real adjustment for Chinese drivers is the left-hand side of the road. The first hour feels unfamiliar, roundabouts especially, but most drivers settle within a day. Take the first stretch slowly and let the owner walk you through the controls.
Distances. New Zealand looks compact on a map, and it is, but the roads are winding two-lane highways, not expressways. Christchurch to Queenstown is about 6 hours and Auckland to Wellington about 8, so plan a 60 km/h average and a relaxed pace, and every day works.
The ferry. If you drive both islands, the Cook Strait ferry crosses Wellington to Picton in about 3.5 hours and carries motorhomes. Book ahead in summer, when sailings fill early, and enjoy the cruise through the Marlborough Sounds.
)
Not every trip has to start at a depot counter. Many Camplify owners will deliver a motorhome to your airport or your first hotel, so you step off the plane, settle in, and drive only once you are rested and ready - not on a jet-lagged first morning on the left-hand side of the road. And because Camplify vehicles are owner-listed, there is an option a depot fleet cannot match: with a caravan, the owner tows it to your holiday park and sets it up for you, then collects it at the end. You never tow and never reverse a trailer - you simply arrive to a comfortable, ready home base, beds made and the kettle on. It is the easiest, most relaxed way to travel, and it suits a family or grandparents who would rather enjoy the view than wrestle with logistics.

The multi-generational family trip
Grandparents, parents, and children in one six-berth motorhome, so the family stays together and there is room to cook and rest along the way. Base on the South Island, where Aoraki Mount Cook, Tekapo, and Queenstown sit close together, and let the grandparents set the pace.
)
The scenic bucket-list self-drive
The New Zealand views you have saved from travel feeds, driven at your own pace: Milford Sound, Lake Tekapo under a clear night sky, the road over the Crown Range, Hobbiton on the way south from Auckland. A two-berth campervan or a comfortable motorhome and a route built around the photos.
)
The New Zealand leg of an Australia trip
Already in Australia on a visitor, work, student or family visa? A current trial lets Chinese passport holders travel on to New Zealand for up to three months on an Electronic Travel Authority, instead of a full visitor visa. Fly the Tasman, pick up a motorhome on arrival, and add a South Island loop to the trip.
Most travellers from China do not pick up the motorhome the morning after they land. Pick the pattern that fits your trip.
Land in Auckland or Christchurch, spend two or three days clearing the jet lag and seeing the city, then take handover when you are ready. Owners are flexible on the start date.
Use the near-airport search filter to find motorhomes within a short transfer of AKL, CHC or ZQN, so you can be on the road the same day you arrive.
Fly into Auckland, drive south to the ferry and through the Southern Alps, and fly home from Christchurch or Queenstown. Arrange one-way collection with the owner, or hire again in the destination city.
)
A typical Camplify host is someone who hires out their self-contained motorhome during the months they are not using it. Many have hosted international travellers before and are happy to meet you at an airport hotel so the first morning is easy.
Owner-listed motorhomes come with the bedding the owner chose, a kettle, a fridge that fits a week of groceries, a current self-containment certificate, and route notes from trips they have driven themselves. Messages run through the Camplify app in English, so everything stays on record - and a translation app makes the back-and-forth easy if English is not your first language.
Pick up from a New Zealand gateway city and head for the mountains, the lakes, or the coast. Most Chinese travellers base on the South Island for the alpine scenery, or start in Auckland and work south.
)
Christchurch
The South Island gateway. Lake Tekapo, Aoraki Mount Cook, Wanaka, and Queenstown all sit within a day's drive, and chain hire is available locally for the winter alpine passes.
)
Auckland
Gateway to the Coromandel, the Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Hobbiton, and the Interislander ferry south. Many international flights land here, and the motorhome is waiting.
)
Queenstown
The South Island scenic base. Milford Sound, Glenorchy, the Routeburn, and Wanaka are all day trips, and it is the closest airport to Milford Sound.
)
Wellington
The capital and the ferry terminal for the Interislander south to Picton. Compact, walkable, and the natural midpoint of any North-plus-South itinerary.
Can I hire a motorhome in New Zealand on my Chinese driving licence?
Yes, with the right paperwork. New Zealand accepts a valid Chinese driving licence for stays under 12 months when it is accompanied by an International Driving Permit, or an NZTA-approved certified English translation of your licence. Because a Chinese licence is not written in English, one of these is required. Carry your licence, the permit or translation, and your passport while you drive, and arrange the translation or permit before you travel.
Is it hard to drive on the left if I am used to driving in China?
It is the main adjustment, since China drives on the right. The first hour feels unfamiliar, roundabouts most of all, but the basics come quickly and most drivers settle within a day. Take the first stretch slowly, and the owner runs you through the motorhome's controls before handover. NZ roads are winding rural highways, so a 60 km/h average is normal.
Do I need a visa to visit New Zealand from China?
It depends on how you arrive. Travellers coming directly from China need a visitor visa. Under a current trial, Chinese passport holders who hold a valid Australian visitor, work, student or family visa can instead travel on to New Zealand from Australia for up to three months on a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA), which is faster and cheaper than a full visitor visa. The NZeTA also covers transit. Always check the latest requirements on the Immigration New Zealand website before you book travel, as the trial terms can change.
Is the booking in Chinese, and what if my English is limited?
The Camplify website, the booking, and owner messaging are in English, and the handover with the owner is in English too. You do not need fluent English: the steps are simple, and a translation app on your phone handles messages and the handover conversation smoothly. It helps to save a few key phrases and to confirm the pickup details in the app in advance so everything is clear.
Are automatic transmission motorhomes available?
Yes. Many Camplify motorhomes and campervans have automatic transmission. Use the search filters to narrow your results, and every listing states whether the vehicle is automatic or manual so you can confirm before booking.
Will the motorhome be Certified Self-Contained for freedom camping?
Many are, and you should ask the owner to confirm before booking. New Zealand tightened the rules in 2025, and certified vehicles now carry a green warrant card. A certified motorhome can park overnight at hundreds of Department of Conservation and council freedom-camping sites at no accommodation cost. Apps like CamperMate and Rankers show the legal spots, and fines for non-compliance are around NZD 400.
Can a big family travel together in one motorhome?
Yes. Camplify lists larger motorhomes that sleep four, six, or more, which suit a multi-generational family travelling together in one vehicle. Each listing shows the number of berths and seatbelts, so check that the vehicle seats and sleeps your whole group, and ask the owner about child seats if you are travelling with young children.
Can I take the motorhome between the North and South Islands?
Yes. The Cook Strait ferry crosses Wellington to Picton in about 3.5 hours and carries motorhomes, for around NZD 200 to 400 each way for the vehicle plus passengers. Book ahead, because the December and January sailings fill weeks out. The crossing through the Marlborough Sounds is a highlight in itself.
Can I pick up in one city and drop off in another?
Often yes. Some owners offer one-way hire, and you can also arrange one-way collection so you fly into one city, drive through, and fly home from another. Many travellers fly into Auckland, drive south, and depart from Christchurch or Queenstown. Confirm the arrangement with the owner before booking.
Can the van be delivered to me, or set up so I don't have to drive it?
Often yes, and it is one of the most comfortable ways to start. Many owners will deliver a motorhome to your airport or first hotel so you do not collect it from a depot or drive on a jet-lagged first day. With a caravan, the owner can tow it to your holiday park and set it up for you, then collect it at the end, so you never tow or reverse a trailer. Delivery and any fee are arranged with the owner and shown before you book.
What if the motorhome breaks down somewhere remote?
Every Camplify hire includes 24/7 roadside assistance covered by the booking fee. The owner is also reachable through the Camplify app, and most arrange a replacement or a holiday-park night if an issue cannot be fixed roadside. Mobile coverage is good on main routes, while Fiordland and the West Coast have patchy spots, so download offline maps before you leave.
What protection is included?
Every Camplify hire includes comprehensive protection with damage and third-party liability coverage. Each listing shows the excess and what is covered, and excess reduction options lower the excess at booking if you want extra peace of mind.
Is there a deposit, and what are the upfront costs?
The price and any additional costs are shown on each listing before you book, so there are no surprises at checkout. Some owners ask for a security deposit or set their own additional fees, and these, along with the excess and what the included protection covers, are shown on the vehicle's page. Check them on the listing before you book, and message the owner through the Camplify app if anything is unclear. You pay through Camplify rather than in cash to the owner.
How much does it cost, and is it cheaper than a rental company?
Owners set their own prices, and each listing shows the full price for your dates before you book, so you can compare. Because the vehicles are owner-listed rather than run by a depot fleet, many travellers find them good value, and longer trips often have weekly or monthly discounts that apply automatically when you select your dates. One larger motorhome shared across a family can also work out better value than separate hotel rooms plus a rental car, and the nights you stay at a campsite save on accommodation.
How do I pay, and does my card from China work?
Visa, Mastercard and American Express work through Camplify, and you can pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay. You pay in NZD and your bank handles the conversion from CNY, with no New Zealand bank account needed. Alipay and WeChat Pay are not accepted, so bring an international card for the booking and any deposit - adding it to Apple Pay before you fly is the easiest option.
When is the best time to drive New Zealand from China?
December through February is New Zealand summer, with the warmest weather and longest days, and it is the most popular window for Chinese travellers and for the school summer holiday. March through May is autumn: quieter, still pleasant, with golden light on the mountains. June through August is the South Island ski and Queenstown adventure season. Book your motorhome around two months ahead, and earlier for the summer peak.
Will my Chinese phone work, or do I need a local SIM?
Chinese plans roam in New Zealand, but daily charges add up on a long trip. A cheaper option is a local prepaid SIM at the airport, where Spark and One NZ cover the main routes, or an international eSIM before you fly. Download offline maps for Fiordland and the West Coast, where coverage is patchy.
Live listings from owners around New Zealand. Larger motorhomes that sleep four to six for a family, two-berth campervans for couples, automatic transmission, and self-contained vehicles for freedom camping. Most sit within a short transfer of a gateway airport. Open the full search.
