Please note: bookings of 4 days or more can be picked in Queenstown area, but any bookings of 1, 2 or 3 days, must be picked up in Wanaka area. An additional fee will be required if you still wish to pick up in Queenstown for short hires. The Defender can also come with other bits and pieces that might make your trip more enjoyable. If you have anything in particular you might like in or on the vehicle, please ask!. If you wish to include Snow Chains, please select "Recovery Tracks" in the extras.

Hiring rules

• All Diesel vehicles in New Zealand are subject to Road User Charges, often referred to as RUC's and are $0.09 per kilometre ($90.00 per 1000kms) and these charges are calculated at the end of the booking, based on the mileage traveled. We do not profit in any way on these charges, we only pass on the direct cost charged to us by the transport agency.

  Weve always wanted to own a Defender, so hiring Larry while we were in NZ felt like a bit of a dream. The setup was unreal. Everything youd need for a proper camp trip. We didnt get to sleep in him this time (too bloody cold) but were already keen to come back and do it properly. Larry handled the icy roads and ski field drives like a champ. Felt way more solid and safe than any normal hire car. And it was actually nice not sticking out like a tourist. People couldnt believe he was a rental. Also, shoutout to Jason. Super easy to deal with, fast replies, just made the whole thing stress-free. Honestly felt like we borrowed a mates car. 10/10

  My Partner and I rented the Defender for two weeks in December and would happily rent it again if we were back in NZ. We have previously travelled in both a van and a 4x4 with a rooftop tent; we both agreed that the Defender has the best set-up weve experienced yet. We found it super easy to access everything we needed with more storage than we expected under the bed. The bed itself was really comfortable with blacked out windows and curtains to afford privacy and to ensure a good nights sleep. The car is kitted out with a good fridge, hob and basic kitchen utensils to get you going. The only downside was not having an indoor area to prepare food when we had bad weather but we found most campsites had a kitchen/undercover area which solved this problem. The car itself is a dream to drive and Jason was quick and easy to communicate with. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Defender to anyone who is interested.

  We travelled the South Island with Barry and it was amazing. The vehicle has everything essential for a roadtrip around New Zealand, even fairy lights! Jason is the greatest guy to hire from; always friendly and helpful and fast with a reply. Barry is a very tall vehicle, so no problem getting around New Zealand's sometimes bumpy roads, and everyone you meet will tell you how cool your vehicle is (which is almost the best part haha). If you know how to work your manuals (especially uphill, cause New Zealand is everything but flat), Barry is the perfect vehicle for the job :)
