The South Island of New Zealand’s famous rolling landscape is dotted with snow-topped mountain peaks. A popular location for a van life road trip, the drives are scenic and relatively short, and the natural environment is unmatched in its beauty. We have various campervans available to hire from local owners in the Canterbury region (Christchurch van hire options are abundant), giving you the freedom to build your trip itinerary your way.
The city of Christchurch is the central destination for a lot of Canterbury travellers. A city that has suffered many devastations, its tenacity and determination are reflected in the feel of the city and the local people. Earthquake damage from 2011 is still visible in the city centre but has been worked with and incorporated into the unique, eclectic feel of the area. With colourful and quirky street art, cute shipping container bars and colourful nightlife, Christchurch is a city that breathes hope and vitality.
In the west of the Canterbury region is the Southern Alps, which is home to the beautiful Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. An imposing but beautiful tract of ice and rock, it features Aoraki/Mount Cook itself which at 2,734 metres is New Zealand’s highest peak. It’s also the place to see the 27 kilometre Tasman Glacier, which winds its way south and east away from the Alps. There are numerous hiking tours and guided tours available within the Park and along the edges of the glacier itself.
If you’re looking to take your accommodation on the road and get away from it all, there’s no better place to start than the Canterbury region. Days can be lost camping in this area, exploring soaring mountains, tiny unique towns, and the best views New Zealand has to offer.
