Breath-taking Tasman lies at the top of the South Island, enjoying the most sunshine in all of New Zealand. So if you want to soak up some rays on your road trip, this is the perfect destination.
The Nelson region of Tasman is home to quirky galleries, breezy boutiques and beautiful heritage buildings. Don’t miss the ‘WOW’ (World of Wearable Art and Collectable Cars), which showcases all kinds of Kiwi cars and memorabilia, as well as an exhibition of extraordinary wearable art pieces. Alternatively, watch glass blowers make their magic at Hoglund Art Glass.
If you’re lucky enough to be in Nelson on a weekend, wander around the vibrant Saturday market and browse handmade arts and crafts. Before you leave for some outdoor adventures, grab a bite of fresh local seafood paired with Sauvignon Blanc from the nearby vineyards.
The Tasman countryside offers heaps of awesome camping spots, with three major National Parks. Each one boasts its own unique wonders. At Kahurangi National Park, you’ll encounter everything from rugged wilderness and coastal plains to riverbank walks (It’s no surprise that many of Lord of the Rings scenes were shot here). Set up camp in Nelson Lakes National Park at the northern end of the Southern Alps to hike up steep peaks and fish in deep lakes. The popular Abel Tasman National Park is small but mighty, with a variety of coastal tracks, striking beaches, and jagged headlands. You can easily spend a few days exploring its raw beauty on foot or by kayak!
