Set up camp at the Lake Mahinapua Campsite, a beautiful lakeside campground surrounded by forest (a 10-minute drive from Hokitika). This popular spot is perfect for water sports and boating. It was historically a route for paddle steamers to the coast.

2. Goldsborough Campsite

Spend a few nights at the Goldsborough Campsite, a sheltered and secluded campsite where an old mining town once stood (a 15-minute drive from Hokitika). Take on the Goldsborough Short Walks, exploring the remains of the gold mine workings and fossicking in the nearby creek.

3. Hans Bay Lake Kaniere Campsite

Stay at Hans Bay Lake Kaniere Campsite, a grassy campsite beside beautiful Lake Kaniere (a 20-minute drive from Hokitika). Spend your time fishing from the jetty or launch your boat and have some fun on the water. Walk to nearby Dorothy Falls, a photogenic multi-step waterfall with a plunge pool at the bottom.

Facilities include flush toilets, a cooking shelter, tap water, a jetty and boat launching. There are 40 unpowered campsites. Bookings are not required (first-come, first-served basis).

4. Shining Star Beachfront Accommodation

Set up camp at the Shining Star Beachfront Accommodation, another family-friendly campground that is only a 15-minute walk from the Hokitika town centre. This campground offers direct access to the beach and is across the road from Glow Worm Dell, a leafy canyon full of glow worms.

Facilities include bathroom blocks, communal kitchens, barbecues, a TV room, a laundry, a playground, a dump station and free WiFi. Bookings can be made on their website.

The Hokitika Holiday Park is a family-favourite camping ground, only a 5-minute drive from the town centre and the beach. Book one of the powered sites and let the kids run wild on the pirate-themed playground and flying fox. Older kids can keep themselves entertained on the basketball and volleyball courts.

6. Links-View Holiday Park

The Links View Holiday Park is a boutique Hokitika camping ground set between the beach and the Mahinapua River. Only a 4-minute drive from the town centre, they offer kayak hire so that you can paddle up the river. Or maybe you’d prefer to hire a mountain bike and ride the Hokitika’s trails.

If you’re an NZMCA member, you can’t beat the NZMCA Hokitika Campground. This highly affordable option is located near the Hokitika River, offering awesome seaside views and great sunsets. Plus, it’s only a 10-minute walk across the bridge to the Hokitika town centre.

Facilities include rubbish bins and a recreation room. A dump station and water can be found nearby. Only NZMCA members can stay at this campsite.
