Kōwhai is a 1975 VW Kombi Van, T2 Sunliner Pop Top. Kōwhai has been lovingly refurbished and comes equipped with everything you need to comfortably experience van life. She is based in beautiful Queenstown in the southwest of New Zealand's South Island, an automatic 2WD Volkswagen with a popup roof, meticulously serviced and in great condition inside and out. Pick up and drop off in Lower Shotover, Queenstown, the foot of the Remarkables. ( The Remarkables have been used as a location in Lord of the Rings, and make another appearance in The Hobbit to recreate the mythical Misty Mountains. ) It takes only 11 minutes by car or 12 min by bus ＋ 5 min walk from the airport. There is also free on-street parking available if you need to leave a car. Early check-in or late check-out subject to availability generally only $50.00 each. We do not allow travel outside a 250km radius from Queenstown unless permission obtained first. We highly recommend going to Glenorchy, Gibbston, Wanaka and Cromwell. We recommend the following campsite. Moke Lake - DOC Campsite, Queenstown - Driftaway Queenstown, Lake Hawea - The Camp, Glenorchy - Mrs Woolly's Campground. Please advise if you intend to travel to Mt Cook (252km) or Milford Sound (286km), you need to hire for at least 5 days at each place. We have a daily allowance of 150km, which is averaged throughout the entire trip. If you exceed this allocated distance for your entire trip, an additional fee of $1.50/km will be applied. There is a strict maximum limit of 200km per day to preserve the engine. Any distance beyond this limit will result in a charge of $1.50/km, and a mechanical inspection fee will also be incurred upon return.The vehicle is pretty old, so this is for safety reason and keep the classic vehicle in good condition. The vehicle is not permitted on the Crown Range Road (Queenstown-Wanaka), Skippers Road. Should you breach the road restriction rules by taking a vehicle on a restricted road, a fee of $800.00 on each occasion that is identified will apply. And a mechanical inspection will also be charged upon return. The vehicle is equipped with GPS tracking that monitors distance and location. The space in the camper van is limited, to maximize the space, we suggest you put your personal belongings in soft travel storage/organiser bags beforehand. If you don’t have any, I can lend you ours. There is a cabinet in the van and you can store your travel storage bags in it, please leave your suitcases with us because they won’t fit well in the van. Kōwhai is a vintage model – it's slow and a little old-fashioned, but it still has lots of charm! I take good care of it and don’t drive it too often. Since it’s an older vehicle, there might be the occasional hiccup. Please plan your trip with some flexibility and leave room for the unexpected – after all, we wouldn’t want to rush this classic!

  Chika was amazing to deal with, Van Is very cool but not the fastest up hill, which is to be expected for such an old girl, we were ok with that as we weren't in a hurry. The bed was so very comfortable and all the bedding was warm. Would totally recommend for trips close to Queenstown

  We had the most dreamy experience in Kohwai! Chika was the most lovely host and told us everything we needed to know. She even helped us plan our itinerary based on the vans capabilities. We felt she was extremely kind and accommodating. It has always been a dream of mine to travel in a yellow vw kombi and Kohwai did not disappoint. Highly recommend this experience! The van was well equipped and comfortable for our journey. the little gift Chika left us was just the cherry on top! Excellent host and excellent campervan. We wish we wouldve been able to keep it for longer. thank you, Chika!
