Athenree Hot Springs & Holiday Park overlooks the gentle waters of Shelly Bay on the northern end of Tauranga Harbour. They offer 85 powered campsites with water views, set amongst magnificent Puriri trees and an abundance of wildlife. You are also less than a 10-minute drive from Waihi Beach.
The best part about this Waihi camping ground is its two thermal mineral hot pools. The larger pool sits between 33-35C and is perfect for children, whilst the smaller adult relaxing pool is set to 39.5C.

Waihi Camp and Cabins is only a five-minute walk from the Waihi town centre, offering unpowered and powered campsites amongst a relaxed rural setting on the banks of the Waitete stream.
This is the perfect Waihi camping ground to stay at if you want to ride the Hauraki Rail Trail, with the starting point of section C (Paeroa to Waihi) only a five-minute ride away. Section C is the most popular section of the trail and follows the Ohinemuri River through the spectacular Karangahake Gorge.

This is a great Waihi camping ground if you are only in town for one night and want to ride the Goldfields Railway - a heritage train ride between Waihi and Waikino.

7. Dickey Flat DOC Campsite

Dickey Flat DOC Campsite offers 35 unpowered campsites beside the Waitawheta River. It is hugely popular with families in summer and is known for its trout fishing and awesome swimming holes. This simple but scenic Waihi camping ground is a highly affordable option for families wanting to do some off-grid camping in nature.
There are a variety of short walks around the campsite, including the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway (2.5-7km return), which follows the old railway and hosts impressive remains from the mining era. Within Karangahake Gorge, you’ll also find the staircase to the stunning Owharoa Falls.
