When it comes to travelling the sites of New Zealand, it’s no secret that the South Island gets most of the credit. While the view is completely different, the North Island really is just as spectacular and well worth exploring. Whether you only have five days to spare or three whole weeks, we have the heaps of North Island road trip ideas to help you see the best of what’s on offer on this stunning island.

How long do you need for a North Island road trip?

Set aside the right amount of time to see it all

You could spend weeks getting lost in the wilderness of the North Island and enjoying all the beauty within. If only we all had the luxury to escape for weeks on end. Alas, duty calls. With this in mind, we have split up our recommended itineraries based on the type of holiday you’re looking at taking.

1. Seven days: Family tour

Travelling with the kids is great, but let’s be honest, we all have our limits. A one week North Island road trip is plenty of time to soak up some of the amazing outdoor views on offer and enjoy some quality family time together.

Depending on the age of the kids, you might be able to stretch this a little bit further. But remember, push it too far and you might get moans of, “I’m bored” echoing through your ears. And trust us, no one wants that on their holiday. It’s also a morebudget-friendly road trip option.

2. Two weeks: Couples tour

You know what they say about holidays: it takes one week to unwind and leave your stresses behind and the second week is when you can be completely relaxed and enjoy yourself. With that in mind, two weeks is the perfect amount of time for a couple wanting to check out the sites.

It allows you to see as much as possible, while also factoring in that all-important downtime. You’ll be able to relax and unwind, which will help you appreciate the sites even more in the process.

3. Three weeks: Adventure tour

Do you love seeking out a little adventure? Do you live for the thrills? If this sounds like you, then the three-week tour is your best bet for the ultimate road trip. It gives you ample time, not only to check out the sites but to experience them in all their glory.

With time on your side, you can head off on endless hikes, take on the challenges of the landscape, and see the North Island in a whole new light.

North Island road trip ideas

Once you work out which holiday best describes you, it’s time to get planning. We will take you through our top itinerary for each holiday, so you can experience the wonders of the North Island at your own pace.
