Map of the Ultimate Nelson Road Trip

Total distance: 409km | Recommended duration: 7 days | Best time to drive the route: Spring or summer | Google Map route

1. Nelson

If you haven’t visited Nelson before, then this is the perfect spot to begin your trip. Make sure you see some of the city before you pack your bags and drive off. The area is packed full of vineyards and local brews that are the perfect treat for those tastebuds of yours.

The area is also well known for its art scene. There are more than 350 working artists and craftspeople in the area, which is the perfect chance for you to soak up a little culture and enjoy a souvenir or two as well.

If you have some time to spare, head along to the Nelson Provincial Museum or the Suter Art Gallery for a little history and culture.

2. Mapua

This small town in New Zealand is right on the coastline and next to Ruby Bay. You can start your visit by jumping on a bike and cycling Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, where you can stop off for a refreshing drink along the way and enjoy the views before heading to Mapua Wharf for some delicious waterfront dining.

The local Appleby Farms Icecream shop is not to be missed, blending delicious fresh fruits for some creative tastes to enjoy.

If you’re looking for a big dose of culture on your Nelson road trip, then the Ruby Coast Arts Trail is just for you. There are several galleries and studios for you to visit, with eight different locations to enjoy. You can also head to the Interactive Wooden Art Gallery, where you can push buttons, turn handles and much more.

3. Abel Tasman National Park

Abel Tasman National Park

There’s so much to explore in Abel Tasman National Park, which is why two nights is ideal. Or even a little longer if you have the time. Start with the gorgeous coastal walk, where you can soak up golden sand, crystal clear waters and plenty of natural bush to explore. This 60km takes a good few days to complete, so just do what you can in the time you have.

Then hop on one of the boat tours in the area, where you can see the seal colonies and take in some stunning views. Or you can try one of their other water activities. There’s kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, kitesurfing or trout fishing.

If you’re looking for something a bit more relaxing, head to Kaiteriteri Beach for the day to enjoy the gorgeous sand and clear waters, or check out Split Apple Rock, which is worth a photo or two.

4. Nelson Lakes National Park

Nelson Park

Welcome to the Nelson Lakes region, the perfect stop on any Nelson road trip. This is another place you want to carve out two or more days to really make the most of. It marks the start of the Southern Alps mountain chain, which runs through the middle of the South Island.

There are a number of lakes within the park, including the two largest: Rotoiti and Rotoroa. Both of these are nice and easy to access if you want to visit for the day, but many of the other lakes require a good hike to visit.

There is plenty to keep you busy during your stay. Pack your bathers and take a dip in the summertime, or rent a kayak, stand-up paddleboard or canoe for some water sports fun. You can even go waterskiing on Lake Rotoiti.

Throw on your walking shoes and head up the mountains for some spectacular views. There’s a large number of long and short-distance hikes for you to choose from.

5. Wairau Valley

While this stop isn’t as popular as some of the other destinations, you won’t regret stopping here. It’s just stunning, and there’s so much to do during your stay.

The area is well-known for supplying the grapes to the nearby vineyards, accounting for 45% of Marlborough’s vineyard area. Take a trip to see the vines, before sampling the famous wines they create. You can head to some cellar doors after in Marlborough and taste some of the delicacies.

You can also go on a kayak trip on the Wairau Lagoons, where you can spot plenty of local wildlife. You can also discover some Maori history as well.

You can visit the nearby Blenheim, and check out the cafes, restaurants, shops and galleries, taking a walk along the Taylor River Reserve to soak up the sights.

6. Pelorus River

Pelorus River

Pelorus River is well known for its bridge which features in the barrel scene in The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. Peter Jackson chose the spot as the perfect backdrop to the dwarves escaping in barrels scene, with the solid rock shorelines, surrounded by the forest and the sandy beach.

But there is also plenty more to see and do in the surrounding area. You can start by exploring the scenic reserves and forest glades between Blenheim and Nelson, which lead to waterfalls and rock pools for you to stop off at.

7. Cable Bay Adventure Park

Cable Bay, Nelson

The last stop before heading back to Nelson is Cable Bay Adventure Park. If you’re looking for adventure, then this is where you will find it. Start with the Skywire Experience, where you can get a good dose of scenery while being shot through above the forest canopy.

Next up, you can take off on a quad bike tour, mountain biking, paint balling, archery, and so much more. Kids will love deeding the tame eels or petting the animals or taking a gentle walk around the river. It’s the perfect mix of adventure and fun that will keep the whole family entertained.
