Exploring the great outdoors in your campervan is like nothing else! No matter how long your trip is, this van is going to become your home away from home, taking you to some amazing sights as you hit the open road.

So it makes sense to deck your van out with all the comforts you might need along the way, including curtains! That way, you can enjoy real privacy and avoid waking up at the crack of dawn on holidays. Below, we take you through a step-by-step guide to DIY campervan curtains so that you can create the perfect set!

The lowdown on DIY campervan curtains

Don’t worry about whether or not you have a handiwork bone in your body - these DIY campervan curtains are quick and simple! All it takes is a commitment from you to see the project through. After all, what could be better than showing off your own hard work to any guests who come to visit?

Below, we take you through some of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to putting together DIY campervan curtains, along with a great step-by-step guide for you to follow!

Do I need campervan curtains/coverings?

Yes! If you don’t have tinted windows, then it’s a good idea to sort out your curtain situation before taking off on that first road trip. Without something covering your windows, you would be waking up in the early hours of the morning, as soon as the sun hits your eyes.

Curtains don’t just look pretty, they are extremely functional too. Opting for radiant blackout curtains will also keep that heat out of your van, so you can relax comfortably inside, even when the engine isn’t on!

Finally, let’s not forget when you actually reach your destination as well. Curtains are the perfect way to enjoy a little privacy while staying at a caravan park and avoiding any prying eyes.

Choosing between curtains vs window covers: what to consider

Wondering what the best option for you is? Both curtains and window covers have their advantages.

Curtains are the cheaper option, and they do a great job if you’re looking to save on costs. Unlike insulated covers, they won’t help as much when it comes to locking out the heat as well. That said, insulated window covers come with the greater price tag. You need to weigh up what you can afford, and whether or not this extra advantage is worth it!

What supplies do you need for DIY campervan curtains?

If you've decided on curtains, then the next step is knowing what you need to stock up on before you get creating. Thankfully, you don’t need too much! You’ll probably find that you have some of these items at home already:

  • Scissors

  • Sewing machine (if you don’t have one, try borrowing from a friend!)

  • Snap tape

  • Mounting hooks (choose ones that match the size of the curtain rod)

  • Fabric glue

  • Velcro strips

  • Fabric

What are the best material options for campervan curtains?

When it comes to choosing the right fabric for your campervan curtains, you want to go for something dark. This will ensure that the sunlight doesn’t seep through in the mornings. Opt for black, brown, dark blue, dark green or purple.

When it comes to materials, that’s entirely up to you! It helps to go into the store and see the selection in person. Hold the fabric up to the light and see how well it blocks it out.

  • Cotton : this is one of the most popular choices. It provides that nice and crisp finish. If you’re hoping to block out the light, then make sure it’s lined or has a tight weave.

  • Polyester : This is a great option as it’s well-priced and doesn’t tend to wrinkle. It doesn’t allow as much airflow as other materials and is flammable (so not to be used in the kitchen).

  • Linen : this natural fibre creates an airy look and is long-lasting. Just note it’s not ideal for blocking the sun.

  • Acrylic : This lightweight fabric offers great insulation on the road. They are also hypoallergenic and resistant to mould and dew. Perfect choice!

The main costs will come down to the fabric you choose, as well as your time! If you’re looking for a budget option, then consider going to an Op Shop and picking up some old curtains that you can resize and reuse in your campervan.

How to make DIY campervan curtains

Step 1: Cut fabric down to the dimensions you need.

Step 2: Hem the edges with your sewing machine. This will prevent them from fraying.

Step 3: Use mounting hooks to hold the curtain rod in place. These will need to be screwed into the side of your campervan.

Step 4: Slide curtains onto the rod. Most rods can be extended to the size you need. Make sure it touches the walls, but don’t go too far or it will damage them.

Step 5: Use fabric glue to attach the snap tape to the centre of the curtains. This means when you draw the curtains, both sides will now connect.

Step 6: Add the velcro to either side of the curtain. This will allow you to velcro the curtain down, to stop any light from coming through. Win!

How should campervan curtains fit in a campervan?

You want to ensure the window is completely covered. This is why we have added in the velcro on either side, to stop the light from coming in unexpectedly.

When buying material, it’s always best to get a little extra, which you can cut down to size. Better safe than sorry!
