Christchurch to Picton Road Trip: Direct Route

Travel time: 4 hours and 27 minutes
If you don’t have much time up your sleeves, we have some great news for you. Take a direct route to Picton and you can get there in just 4 hours and 27 minutes. Of course, you’ll want to add a toilet and food stop or two along the way, which will add a little time. But, it’s easy enough to do in one day.
Kaikoura is the perfect place to plan a stop to stretch your legs. Known for its abundant wildlife you can take a trip along the Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway, which starts at the town centre and ends at the lookout points at Point Kean.
You can then spend your time checking out the sites in Picton for a few nights, before heading directly back to Christchurch and making the trip a second time.
Christchurch to Picton Road Trip: Alternate Route

If you have a little more time on your hands, then take the alternate route and make a few stopovers along the way. You’ll be able to explore more of the stunning South Island as you go and take your time soaking up the sites. It takes you a little further inland to really experience everything on offer. There are plenty ofcampgrounds near Christchurch so you can stop overnight on the way.
Stop 1: Christchurch to Tekoa Range
Travel time: 1 hour and 36 minutes
This small place in New Zealand can be explored in just a day, making it the perfect leisurely stopover on your way to Picton. It’s a little off the beaten track, so you’ll enjoy some truly unique experiences, away from other tourists.
One of the best things to do is hire a jet boat to explore the stunning scenery of the Waiau River. The boat can take you down narrow gorges, white water rapids and shallow areas, so you can experience a thrill at the same time. It’s an experience you’ll never forget.
Stop 2: Tekoa Range to Maruia

Travel time: 54 minutes
Looking for a little rest and relaxation on your trip? This is where you’ll find it. Maruia is home to some natural mineral hot springs, where you’ll find a day spa and wellness destination conveniently tucked away. It’s the perfect opportunity to indulge yourself a little.
There’s plenty more to see and do while you’re there as well. You can take a walk to Lake Daniell and enjoy the Lewis Pass scenery as you go. Head over and check out Maruia Falls, have a picnic at Marble Hill and much more. You can easily enjoy a couple of days at this stopover – if time allows.
Stop 3: Maruia to Lake Rotoiti

Travel time: 1 hour 58 minutes
One of the three largest lakes in the Rotorua region, you will find glow worm caves and a secluded hot pool to keep you busy. There’s also plenty to do on the lake itself if you’re a fan of water sports. You have the option to kayak, fish, head off rafting or go on a jet boat.
When you’re ready for some downtime you can head on over to Manupirua Springs, which you can only get to by air or water. It’s the perfect spot to unwind away from the crowds.
Stop 4: Lake Rotoiti to Picton

Travel time: 1 hour 35 minutes
Once you make it to Picton, the adventure is really only just beginning! This beautiful port town is the perfect spot to stay for a few days and enjoy. You’ll find cafes, restaurants, galleries, and plenty of outdoor activities. Set up camp at one of the best campgrounds in Picton and get exploring!
There’s a floating maritime museum and aquarium, and you can also go fishing, dolphin watching, sea kayaking or mountain biking during your stay. Pop the Queen Charlotte Track on your to-do list, where you can walk or ride and check out some great scenery.
You can head back using the direct route above. Or you can even split up the stops on our alternate route and enjoy some on the way there, and the rest on the way back. The choice is yours.
