5 steps to being a conscious traveller

Roady
Campervan parked up next to a turquoise lake in the South Island, Aotearoa.

We asked our mates at Roady how to be the best kind of traveller while exploring New Zealand. Here’s what they had to say.

1. Drive carefully

We may be biased, but there’s no better place to drive through than New Zealand. That said, it’s important not to get too distracted by the famous scenery. Plan your driving day, take regular breaks and remember there’s no rush; with landscapes this beautiful, who would even want to speed?

2. Leave no trace

Enjoy the beauty of New Zealand's outdoors without leaving a trace of your visit. Minimise your waste, make sure everything you brought leaves with you, and practice your three Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle. To avoid single-use plastics, be sure to pack your keep cups, reusable drink bottles, reusable bags and cutlery before you get going.

3. Protect the environment

Try to appreciate New Zealand’s natural beauty without disturbing the environment. Stick to the trails, be aware of fire bans, conserve water and always, always respect native animals and plants from a distance.

4. Support local

It's been a tough couple of years for tourism, and our operators, shops and hospo venues haven't had it easy. Support local by trying independently owned supermarkets, bars and restaurants, and don’t be afraid to test out somewhere new. It’s all part of the adventure!

5. Be Respectful

Pay attention to the requests asked of you as a visitor and treat those you meet with kindness. Follow cultural practices and take some time to learn a little more about Māori culture. Think of ways you can contribute while being here, such as getting involved in a beach clean-up or tree planting.
