It’s official. These are the 5 most picture perfect campsites in New Zealand.
)
Ah, summer. Sunny days, balmy nights, and hazy memories that linger long after they’re done. It’s the start of road trip season, and exploring New Zealand from the front seat of a van is the only way to do it, we think. But if you want to fill your camera roll with only the best of the best, we’ve put together a list of some of the most stunning, gob-smacking, can’t-turn-your-eyes-away campsites in Aotearoa.
Milford Sound Lodge
If you’re into ancient rainforests nestled amongst towering stone peaks at the bottom of the world, and let’s face it, who isn’t, then Milford Sound should be right at the top of your list. The Rainforest Campervan Park at the Lodge is the only place to stay overnight in your van while visiting this Jurassic corner of the country, and will tick all your boxes for picturesque views. The only things missing in this jaw-dropping landscape are pterodactyls. We think.
Moke Lake Campsite
If you’re journeying through the southern city of Queenstown, but you’re finding there’s just too many people asking you to bungee jump, go white water rafting, or go bungee jumping in a white water raft, get back in your van and head to Lake Moke. Only a 30 minute drive from the centre of Queenstown, you’ll quickly find yourself sidled up along the clear waters of the lake, ringed with mountains, and feeling a million kilometres from civilisation. This peaceful retreat will have cameras fluttering non-stop, but don’t forget to give your eyes a chance to take it in, too.
Lake Kaniere Campsite
This West Coast campsite seems taken right out of a mythical fable. Wake up to misty, cloud-covered peaks along the shore of this beautiful lake, with the sites spread so that every camper gets their own little slice of paradise. Lake Kaniere is ideal for fishing, boating or swimming, so if your view isn’t perfect enough from your van, get out on the waters and get amongst it.
Kerr Bay Campsite
More lakes? More mountains? Yes please! New Zealand isn’t called ‘The Land of 1000 Lakes and Even More Mountains’ for no reason. (It’s not, but we like the name.) This beautiful campsite is tucked away along the banks of Lake Rotoiti, and makes for a fantastic morning surprise each time you wake up, as you wonder just how you got to heaven, and how long you can stay for.
Lake Pukaki
Finally, we’re leaving you with possibly the most spectacular region in all of New Zealand. Lake Pukaki stretches from the base of Mt Cook into the rugged countryside of Mackenzie, and is ringed with freedom camping spots that have to be seen to be believed. With so many spots to choose from, you can have entire campsites to yourself as you gaze upon the King of the Mountains and one of the finest views you’ll happen across. You can thank us later.
